Praise the Lord we are finally able to begin following Him in this new endeavor!
Many people believe that everything begins with the first step. I think a better way to look at it is to begin with the first plan. Plans often times need to be adjusted or redirected, sometimes thrown out the window completely, but a good plan can save us from many mistakes. Some key components to developing a good plan that I’ve learned over the years are simple but so helpful.
First, everything starts with prayer. If you have never had to sit and pray and ponder to get an answer than you weren’t asking the right questions. I always feel like if I have the answer I’m not dreaming big enough for God. As we are beginning the first steps in the process of becoming missionaries to a foreign field prayer has never seemed more important. At the age of 38 I feel an immense amount of pressure to not waste time and to not make mistakes. The only way I can minimize the mistakes and maximize the time I have left to serve the Lord is to seek His face continually. The actions I take and the effeort I put forth are up to me, but the results will always be up to Him. More important than taking fast steps is making sure I’m taking the right steps. "Teach me Thy way, O LORD, lead me in a plain path, Ps 27:11.
Secondly, set realistic goals. I’m terrible at this because my God is able to do abundantly more than I can ask or think. So I always defer to people with experience in the areas I’m working. I admit the competetive nature within me says we can beat that, The years of experince in facing my own fragility and failures says be realistic but hope for God to show up and blow your mind .
Lastly, no plan will work without action. decide how you will accomplish your goals before you start. I applaud those who"wing it" and live by the moto "better to be lucky than good", but I’ve learned over the years God blesses the dilligent. Heb.11:6
