May 2014 Prayer Letter (by Mark Tolson)

Dear Pastors, Partners & Praying Friends,

It has been an eventful time over the past few weeks. The Lord is continuing to work in the midst of everything that is going on.

Persecution in Harbin: Our teammates in Harbin have recently been deported from the country. On Easter morning, the police raided four churches and forced them to stop the service claiming they were illegal. After questioning the church leadership, both American and Chinese, they released them. The Americans would soon find out they would have to leave the country within 10 days.

We believe that this was a specific case, and there is no general crackdown happening nationwide. Although, the current administration is pushing to enforced the laws that are already in place. We do not expect any repercussion from this situation in the near future, but we know that this could happen to us at any time, as well. We ask for your prayers as we continue to boldly proclaim the gospel in this communist land.

We visited the churches in Harbin and said goodbye to our teammates, not knowing when we will see them next. The churches have stood strong and continue having services despite their illegal status. They have tried to register with the government, but they have not been allowed to for unknown reasons.

We will be the only American missionaries with our team that are left in the country. We have two families on deputation that are coming to take the place of those who were kicked out. Also, the families who were deported will try to get back in or work in a nearby Chinese speaking country. If you are interested in helping any of these families get to the field quicker through supporting them or having them in your church, please contact me.

Going Forward: We are continuing to move forward here in our city. Another young man recently told me that he now believes and is wanting to get baptized. The churches here haven’t skipped a beat, and we have continued to have services. We had several first time visitors at our Easter Activity, and they all heard a clear presentation of the gospel!

Dalian Grace Baptist Church is a new church plant that we mentioned last month. It is doing well, and we are seeing fruit from it. We started Sunday school there, and it has been a great tool to help train the young men who are teaching the classes. Please continue praying for this young church.

Thank you for being a part of our team, Project China, with your prayers and financial support!
