Is Christ Pre-Eminent in your Life?

“Christ is Preeminent”

Colossians 1:18, “ And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.”

In my opinion this is the key verse to this whole book. There were those that were trying to trick the Christians and teaching things that were not in the bible. They were teaching that the worship of angels was necessary, that you could attain spiritual perfection, that you could be released from fleshly desires simply by following the rules they were teaching you had to follow. Then you had Jews who were teaching you must follow all the rules of the OT law as well. So there were many who were trying to deceive those of the church here.

Paul simply writes that Christ is greater than all these things. There is no need for anything else when you have Christ.

Paul lists many things in this book about how Christ is greater than all and everything. He is God, he gave his life for ours, he forgave us, He created real change when he saved us and so much more. This is what makes him better. This is what makes him first, above all things. This is why He should be first in our lives.

The problem we have is that Christ does not have the preeminence in our lives. The reason why we can’t be faithful to come to church is because Christ is not preeminent in our lives.

The reason why you can’t read your bible faithfully is because Christ is not preeminent in your life.

The reason why you will not get involved in serving is that Christ does not have the preeminence if your life.

Either that or you are not a believer to begin with.

The point that Paul is making is that Christ is greater than all the things that these people were trying to deceive them with.

Face it, Christ is the greatest thing that has ever happened to you and me, but so many times He gets treated as if he doesn’t matter in our lives.

If Christ has his proper place in your life (#1) you will do all these things with pleasure. You will DESIRE to live like Christ is first in your life.

I think it is time for us to ask the question. What place does Christ hold in your life?

Is He above your studies?

Is He above your job?

Is He above your football?

Is He above your family and friends?

Because if He is not first, above all these things, in our lives then we are failing Him, who loves us so very much.
